If you’ve been following me for a while, you may know that The Green Tomato Sandwich is one of the very first videos I uploaded to TikTok. 

I completed my undergrad in the South where fried green tomatoes are a beloved dish. Somewhere along the way, I discovered how to pickle them and, soon after The Green Tomato Sandwich was born. Now, l look forward to tomato season all year long to make this for my family, friends, and myself.

What are green tomatoes?

They are unripe red tomatoes, not tomatoes that are green when they’re fully ripe. They’re perfect for pickling at this stage because they’re crunchy and have an amazing tomato flavor.  I’ve had the best luck finding these at farmers markets but around this time of year, you may be able to find them at a few specialty markets. Or you do what I did and raid a friend’s garden before the tomatoes have gone from green to red.
